LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – First-year
Emma Matera (155lbs) clinched her way to the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships with a third-place finish at the NCWWC Region 1 Championships on Saturday afternoon.
Matera led the Bears to a sixth-place finish overall behind a total of 73.5 total team points, while Sacred Heart won the team title with 203 points. Division II Lock Haven (154) finished second, East Stroudsburg (142) placed third, and Elmira rounded out the top-four with 106.5 team points.
She opened with a loss her opening match to Western New England's Kendall Branchaud, but rattled off five straight victories to earn the top-three finish in the 155lb bracket. In the consolations, she collected a 58-second fall over Alvernia's Genevleve Weikel before tallying a 9-1 decision over East Stroudsburg's Paitlyn Delong to reach the consolation quarterfinals. After a pinfall at the 1:40-mark over ESU's Daminana Racciatti, Matera revenged a previous loss this season with a 9-0 decision against Sacred Heart's Tayla Tildsley to reach the third-place bout. In the consolation finals, Matera trailed 4-0 entering the final period, but rallied behind a two-point and four-point maneuvers to record the 5-4 victory. Tied 4-4 with under 20 seconds remaining, she was in deep on an offensive shot before pushing her opponent out of the circle to earn the go-ahead point and the victory.
Sophomore
Kalli Roskos (123lbs) and first-year
Cloe Charlesworth (143lbs) each reached the consolations finals but earned fifth place finishes after falling in their true fourth matches. After dropping her opening match, Roskos battled back in the consolations with three consecutive victories to reach the consolation finals. Roskos collected back-to-back technical superiority victories, before tallying an 8-0 decision over Elmira's Megan Edwards to reach the third-place bout. In the consolation finals, Roskos lost via a 5-2 decision to ESU's Jackelne Ovieo-Ramos and fell in her true fourth match to Delaware Valley's Bridgette Schoultz. For Charlesworth, she opened with a technical superiority over New England's Olivia Wojusik to reach the quarterfinals. After a loss in the quarterfinals, Charlesworth earned three consecutive victories by pinfall to reach the third-place bout. She earned a 1:56 fall over Western New England's Rebecca Kilday before tallying a 1:27 fall over ESU's Angelina Hiller in the Consolation round three. In the consolation semifinals, Charlesworth collected a 29-second fall over ESU's Carney Wyble but fell in the third-place bout to Western's New England's Dakota-Marie Dinielli. Unfortunately, in her true fourth-place match, Charlesworth fell to Lock Haven's Paige Jackson to finish fifth in her Regional Championship debut.
A trio of first-years shined in their debut at the Region 1 Championships as
Mandy Gavares (101lbs),
Stacy Bloomfield (130lbs) and
Paisley Fox (136lbs) each collected seventh-place finishes in their respective weight classes.
Matera will return to the mat on Friday, March 8
th as she will represent Ursinus at the NCWWC National Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
