CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA – A pair of first year Ursinus College women's wrestlers made their debut at National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships (NCWWC) on Friday held at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse Arena.
First-years
Cloe Charlesworth (143lbs) and
Emma Matera (155lbs) each battled within their respective weight classes. It marks as the second consecutive season with the Bears sending a duo of first years to the National Championship tournament.
In the 143lb bracket, Charlesworth received a bye in the opening round before falling by technical superiority, 12-2, against Iowa's No. 2 seed Reese Larramendy. In the consolations, Charlesworth met returning All-American Gannon's Lili Ujfalvi and used a 7-5 come-from-behind victory to advance to the following round. During the match, Charlesworth trailed 5-0 entering the final period before rallying off seven straight points to earn the victory. With under a minute remaining and trailing 5-4, she tallied a caution point before using a takedown for the win. Unfortunately, in the next round, Charlesworth fell by an 8-4 decision to Sacred Heart's returning All-American Khadijah Sanusi.
"I'm so incredibly proud of how Cloe and Emma competed today," Director of Wrestling
Joe Jamison said. "Cloe wrestled three All-Americans today and absolutely battled. She beat one of them and significantly closed the gap on another. She has overcome a lot this year and will be a force to reckon with next season.
Matera opened against the No. 1 overall seed Iowa's Marlynne Deede and unfortunately fell by a first-period fall. In the consolation bracket, Matera meet Emmanuel College's Jocelyn Yepez and fell by a 10-0 score. Jamison added "Emma was an absolute rock for us this year and she's only getting started. Her impact in the room and on the mat was greater than we could've expected and will carry us to new heights." Matera closes out her rookie season holding the team lead in wins with a 26-10 record and was the highest placing wrestler for the Bears at the PA Collegiate Championships and the Region 1 Championships.
The Bears wrap up yet another successful season after finishing with a 7-4 overall dual record and earning a sixth-place team finish at the NCWWC Region 1 Championships.
The NCWWC currently includes NCAA programs from the Division I, II, and III levels. Athletes qualified for the 2024 NCWWC through six regional qualifiers.
