Gavares and Roskos Lead Women's Wrestling at Will Abele Open

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Junior Kalli Roskos and sophomore Mandy Gavares earned second-place finishes leading the Ursinus College women's wrestling team at the Will Abele Open on Saturday afternoon.
 

The Bears had seven members finishing within the top-six of their respective weight class leading Ursinus to a third-place team finish behind 83.5 total points. The field consisted of 18 teams with No. 17 East Stroudsburg University (131) winning the team title and Western New England (104) placing second overall.


"We wrestled really well today and battled through a tough tournament," Director of Wrestling Joe Jamison said. "We continue to improve every weekend and we're putting a stamp on our identity. Big things are ahead."

 
Roskos (125lbs) and Gavares (103lbs) each reached the championship final earning runner-up finishes, while sophomores Emma Matera (160lbs) and Paisley Fox (145lbs) tallied third-place nods. Sophomore Stacy Bloomfield (131lbs) added a fourth-place finish for the Bears, while first-years Emma Sagi (138lbs) and Evette Colon (207lbs) placed fifth and sixth, respectively.

 
Roskos opened with a 10-0 technical superiority over New England's Morgan Gora, before advancing to the championship match with a 11-0 technical superiority over Muhlenberg's Alessandra Rodriguez. In the title bout, Roskos fell by an 8-1 score against Western New England's Linda Holeman. Meanwhile, Gavares the No. 3 seed earned a 10-0 superiority victory over Cedar Crest's Lauren Jackson and pinned the No. 2 seed New England's Alexis Dobson at the 1:05-mark to reach the finals. Unfortunately, Gavares fell by fall against the No. 1 seed East Stroudsburg's Olivia Klein to place second.

 
At 160lbs, Matera opened with a fall over Cedar Crest's Draydon Charman while a 10-0 technical superiority victory over ESU's Jade Huerta punched her ticket into the semifinals. Next, Matera fell against the top seed and eventual champion ESU Tiffani Babublitz but responded with a 7-2 decision over WNE's Atiyana Williams to finish third. Fox recorded a fall over Elmira's Camila Hidalgo in her opening bout and advanced into the semis with a 10-0 victory over WNE's Kendall Branchaud. In the semifinals, Fox fell by fall against the top seed but bounced back with a fall over WNE's Noelle Alexander in the third-place bout to earn bronze. During that match, Fox trailed by as much as 6-0, before tying the match at eight apiece and collecting the pin at the 3:40-mark.
 

At 145lbs, tallied a 10-0 victory over WNE's Amara Santulli in her opening bout and advanced into the semifinals with an 8-2 decision over Elmira's Gabby Bradigan. During her quarterfinals match, Bloomfield jumped out to a 6-0 early lead before a takedown in the final minute of the second period clinched the victory. In her next match, Bloomfield fell by superiority against the top seed ESU's Zoe Gress and dropped her third-place match by fall against NYCRTC's Kira Pipkins to place fourth overall.

 
Sagi shined for the Bears at 138lbs finishing with a 5-1 record that included three victories by fall. She opened with an 11-0 victory in her opening match and advanced into the quarterfinals with a 28-second fall over Alfred State's Emily Brown. After falling in her next match, Sagi responded in the consolations with a fall at the 2:50-mark over New Jersey City's Kayla Zeppetelli and a 33-second fall against ESU's Angelica Ramos to place fifth.
 
 
The Bears will return to action on Sunday, January 26th as they travel to East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania for the PA Collegiate Championships.
