Strong Showing Powers Women's Wrestling past Marymount and Cedar Crest

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Behind an impressive showing, the Ursinus women's wrestling team swept an early season tri-match against Marymount University and Cedar Crest College on Sunday afternoon in Helfferich Hall.

With the victories, Ursinus improved to 2-0 to open the season and extended its dual-match winning streak to eight, dating back to Jan. 12 of last season.

"We got the job done today but left some points out there on the mat," Director of Wrestling Joe Jamison said. "If we are going to progress and be a national power, we have to be better in critical situations. We're competing through a training phase right now and matches like this are going to happen, so I'm glad that we were able to get it done. We're excited to get back at it on Thursday against Lock Haven."

At 138 pounds, Ursinus increased its lead to 21-8 behind the quickest fall of the match as junior Paisley Fox pinned Marymount's Mia Gutierrez-Fuentes in just 18 seconds. Fox secured an early takedown before running a half for the pin.

Marymount responded with a technical fall at 145 pounds, but first-years Tessa Master and Jurelys Peguero Del Rosario each recorded wins by forfeit to seal a 31-17 victory for the Bears.

Ursinus 31, Cedar Crest 15

The Bears got off to another fast start against the Eagles, tallying a pair of first-period falls to take a 10-0 lead. Gavares opened the match with a 22-second pin over Cedar Crest's Mary Lopes, while first-year Aubree Butler pinned Leilani Martinez at the 1:38 mark of the 110-pound bout. Gavares used a headlock to secure her pin, while Butler utilized a leg trip before readjusting for the fall.

Cedar Crest answered with a victory by fall at 117 pounds, but Ursinus responded as senior Kalli Roskos earned a decision to extend the Bears' lead to 13-6. After Bloomfield received a forfeit at 131, Fox tallied the quickest pin of the day just 10 seconds over Adriana Dias to stretch the lead to 23-6.
