NEW TRIPOLI, Pa. – Behind their lowest two-day score of the season, the Ursinus College men's golf team earned a sixth-place finish at the DeSales University Spring Classic.
Five Bears competed at the Olde Homestead Golf Course, a par-72 course that stretches over 6,615-yards. Ursinus totaled a season-best two-day score of 635, shooting a 315 on Friday and a team total of 320 in round two. Drew University won the team title, recording a final tally of 586. Albright College (594) placed second, Scranton University (609) took third, with Arcadia University (615), and Salisbury University (624) rounding out the top-five.
Juniors
Jimmy Cage,
Billy Breslin, and first-year
Aidan Bonczek paced the Bears lineup, each recording collegiate lows over the two-day tournament enroute to a sixth-place team finish. Cage shot a career-low 76 on Friday, then shot an 80 on Saturday to tie for 21st overall with a final score of 156. On Friday, Cage collected birdies on the par-5 first and par-5 12th holes, while adding 12 pars en route to his career performance. During the second day, Cage's round was highlighted by seven straight pars from holes six to 12, signing for an 80. His previous career low of 77 occurred at the Golden Oaks Invitational on September 30 this season.
Sophomore
Trevor Maden tied for 30th overall with a two-day total of 159, behind rounds of 77 and 82. In his first round, Maden closed out the front nine with a 40, then finished the back nine with a one-over 37, totaling a final score of 77 on Friday. He finished his tournament by scoring a birdie on the par-4 14th hole, then earning pars over the final four holes of the event.
Breslin recorded his career low on Saturday, shooting a 75, and tying for 36th overall. On day two, he tallied pars on eight of the first nine holes, while birdies on the par-4 10th and par-5 16
th allowed him to finish with the three-over 75. His Friday round was highlighted by shooting a 43 on each side of the clubhouse.
Sophomore
Brandon Mongan finished tied for 44th, recording an 83 on each day, totaling a two-day score of 166. During his opening round, Mongan collected a birdie on the par-3 13th, then totaled two birdies and six pars on Saturday to finish 11-over. Bonczek recorded his collegiate low on Friday, signing for a 79. Overall, Bonczek placed 50th, shooting a 79 and 89 for a final score of 168. He finished with three birdies on Friday, including two straight on the par-4 15th and par-5 16th. In his final round, Bonczek tallied three birdies over the first 10 holes en route to his lowest career two-day score .
The Bears return to action on Thursday, April 10th as they host the Spring Awakening at the Turtle Creek Golf Club at 8 a.m.
