SHAWNEE ON DELAWARE, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's golf team posted its third-lowest team score of the season and sits ninth in the standings after the opening round of The Spring Thaw on Friday afternoon.
Five Bears competed at the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort, a par-72 course measuring 6,725 yards. Ursinus recorded a team score of 314 (+26) to place ninth. Bridgewater University leads the 13-team field with a 285 (-3), while Stevens (292) and Clarkson (299) round out the top three. Allegheny College (302) is fourth, Moravian College (303) sits fifth and Drew University is sixth at 307.
First-year
JP Hoban paced the Bears, carding a 4-over 76 to sit tied for 19th after the opening round. Hoban recorded six pars on the front nine before posting three birdies on the back nine for an even-par 36. He birdied the par-5 13th and 15th holes before closing his round with a birdie on the par-3 18th.
Classmate
Lucas Milliken also impressed, posting a collegiate-low round of 76 to tie Hoban for 19th. Milliken shot a 3-over 39 on the front nine before a birdie on the par-3 14th and an eagle on the par-5 15th highlighted a 1-over 37 on the back. He totaled nine pars and added a birdie on the par-3 eighth hole.
First-year
Jason Walsh is tied for 42nd after carding an 8-over 80. Walsh birdied the par-5 third hole and recorded 12 pars over his final 15 holes, finishing with a 42 on the front nine and a 2-over 38 on the back.
Sophomore
Aidan Bonczek and senior
Jimmy Cage are tied for 55th after each shot an 82 (+10). Bonczek totaled nine pars and posted a 3-over 39 on the back nine. Cage birdied the par-5 sixth hole and added six pars over his final nine holes to finish with a 4-over 40.
Ursinus returns to action Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. for the second round of The Spring Thaw.
