GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Ursinus men's basketball team battled throughout but suffered an 80-74 setback against Gettysburg College on Saturday afternoon inside Bream Gymnasium.
With the loss, Ursinus moves to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in Centennial Conference play. Meanwhile, the Bullets improved to 7-8 on the season and 2-1 in conference action. Ursinus had four players score in double figures, led by sophomore
Jamie Murphy with 19 points and nine rebounds. Senior
Mohamed Toure recorded his second straight double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while junior
Matthew Field tallied a season-high 13 points and five rebounds.
Gettysburg jumped out to an early 5-2 advantage as both teams traded baskets through the first two minutes. After an 8-4 run by the Bullets, Murphy and first-year
Trevor Toulson scored baskets, while a 3-pointer by Toure tied the contest at 13. Ursinus gained its first lead of the game at the 12:11 mark when Field scored off an assist from senior
Nick Nocito. On the Bears' ensuing possession, Field knocked down a 3-pointer to give Ursinus an 18-13 advantage. Gettysburg responded with a 12-5 run over the next five minutes to take a 25-23 lead with 6:36 remaining in the first half. The Bullets closed the half on a 10-4 run over the final three minutes and held a 38-34 halftime lead.
Both teams traded points to open the second half until a Nocito triple cut the Bears' deficit to 41-40 with 17:02 remaining. Gettysburg answered with an 11-1 run to build a 52-41 lead. Murphy scored three straight points for Ursinus, and a Nocito layup followed by an offensive putback from Murphy trimmed the deficit to five with 12:08 to play. After a Toure layup made the score 54-51, Gettysburg used a 9-3 run to extend its lead to 63-54 at the 8:37 mark. The Bears were able to cut the deficit to four with two minutes remaining but could not complete the comeback, eventually falling 80-74.
Ursinus shot 49.1% (26 of 53) from the field, 27.8% (5 of 18) from 3-point range, and 48.6% (17 of 35) at the free-throw line. Gettysburg shot 45.3% (24 of 53) from the floor, 32.0% (8 of 25) from beyond the arc, and 60.0% (24 of 40) at the line. Caleb Gillus led the Bullets with a game-high 26 points, while Ray Zamloot added 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bears return to action Wednesday, January 21st, when they travel to Muhlenberg College for a Centennial Conference matchup starting at 3 p.m.
