PREVIEW: Baseball Set to Face Johns Hopkins in CC Tournament

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus Baseball team has advanced to the double elimination rounds of the Centennial Conference Tournament and will now take on the top-seeds Johns Hopkins on Thursday, April 30th at 3:00 p.m.

Ticket Information
 
The Centennial Conference has announced that Hudl will serve as the ticket provider for CC championship events. Hudl will give event attendees the ability to purchase tickets online for each round of the Centennial postseason. Centennial fans will be able to find all scheduled postseason events on the Centennial ticketing homepage and quickly purchase tickets to receive via email. Fans will then use their smartphone to gain access at championship events through a simple and secure ticket validation process.  Below are the ticket prices for each round of the postseason:

Records
Ursinus holds a 23-16-1 overall record and a finished the regular season with a 9-9 mark in Centennial play. The Bears finished fourth in the Centennial regular season standings. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays finished the regular season with an overall record of 30-9 and a 13-5 mark in Centennial play. The Blue Jays finished at the top of the league standings for the third straight season.
 
 
Scouting the Bears
 
The Bears advanced into the double elimination portion of the Centennial Conference Tournament by defeating Gettysburg 4-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Thomas Field. Gettysburg took the initial 1-0 lead in the top of the first and Ursinus scored all its runs in the third inning. Junior Brandon Sullivan tripled to initially tie the game and came around to score on a single from sophomore Matthew Callahan in the next at-bat. Sophomore Isaac Gesford delivered a two-out two-run single to make it 4-1. Sophomore Alex Grehawick came in from the bullpen in the fifth inning and pitched 4.1 scoreless innings by allowing just three hits and striking out four to preserve the game. The Bears hold a .309 batting average as a team behind a strong lineup up front and has the fourth-lowest pitching staff ERA in the Centennial Conference at 6.08.
 
Sophomore Luke Kopec leads the Bears and ranks 12th in the Centennial at .382 in his first season on the team and is in a four-way tie for the team lead with 58 hits and two-way tie with 12 doubles. Kopec also has a team-leading five home runs and ranks third with 40 RBI. First-year Brett Barrett has had a breakout collegiate debut campaign as he leads the team with 46 RBI's which is 10th in the Centennial and is tied with Kopec for the team lead with 58 hits. Barrett has the fourth highest batting average on the team at .360 and is tied for the Centennial Conference lead with six triples. Sullivan ranks third on the team with a .377 and leads the team with 54 runs scored while being tied for third in the Centennial with 28 stolen bases. Callahan ranks second on the team with a .379 batting average and is one of the four tied for the team lead with 58 hits. Senior pitchers Dan Bass and Max Shilstone have been a potent 1-2 punch on the mound for the Bears. Bass leads the Centennial with 66 innings pitched and has a team-leading five wins that is tied for fourth in the Centennial behind two complete games. He ranks second in the Centennial with 57 strikeouts. Shilstone has four wins and now holds the lowest ERA in the Centennial Conference at 2.85 in 41.0 innings pitched.
 
 
Bears in the Playoffs
Ursinus is making its eighth all-time appearance in the Centennial Conference tournament since the first one held in 2002, and first appearance since 2017 when they reached the Championship Round. They hosted their first home tournament game since hosting the Tournament weekend in 2009 and have won three Centennial Championships in 1996, 1999, and 2000.
 
 
Scouting the Blue Jays
 
The Blue Jays have not skipped a beat since their long-time head coach Bob Babb retired following the 2025 season and seek their fourth straight Centennial Conference title. They hold the third highest team batting average at .331 and hold the lowest team ERA in the Centennial at 4.27. Johns Hopkins has hit a Centennial-leading 83 home runs as a team and have conference leads at 440 RBI's and 469 runs scored. Keiffer Ary leads the team and is tied for second in the Centennial Conference with a .448 batting average. William Jaun leads the team with 56 hits and is one of three players with at least 10 home runs on the season. Lukas Geer ranks second in the Centennial with a team-leading 63 RBI's and has 11 home runs while Jacob Harris leads the team and is tied for second in the Centennial with 12 home runs. Kieren Collins holds the Blue Jays lowest ERA at 4.72 in 47.2 innings and holds a 5-0 record. Ryan Anderson has the second lowest ERA at 4.93 in 45.2 innings and has a pair of wins.
 
 
Blue Jays in the Playoffs
 
Johns Hopkins has made all 23 Centennial Conference Tournaments held and has won 15 of them. The Blue Jays have 19 overall Centennial Conference Tournament titles which includes the last three in a row and this will be their 16th time hosting the Championship weekend.
 
Series History
 
Johns Hopkins holds the all-time series advantage over the Bears at 90-18. This will be the seventh all-time postseason meeting between the two teams with the most recent being in the 2017 Centennial Championship series where the Blue Jays sealed the Championship with a 4-3 win.
 
 
Last Meeting
 
The Bears and Blue Jays are no strangers to each other this season as they wrapped up the regular season against each other on Sunday and split the doubleheader. Johns Hopkins rallied for a 6-5 win in game one behind scoring three runs in the seventh inning which set up the Bears in a must-win scenario in game two to make the Centennial Conference Tournament. Ursinus went up 2-0 in the top of the first before the Blue Jays countered with three runs in the bottom half to go up 3-2. Barrett delivered the decisive hit in the top of the fifth, a go-ahead three-run home run, to put Ursinus up 5-3. The Bears added three runs in the top of the eighth to go up 8-3 and Shilstone completed his heroic complete game gem to send Ursinus into the postseason.
 
 
Ursinus Head Coach: Kyle Lindsay
Kyle Lindsay joined the Bears prior to the 2023 season and has brought Ursinus back into contention. He has won 86 games in four seasons as the head coach of the Bears after initially making his head coach debut at Delaware Valley in 2022. Lindsay has coached four All-Centennial selections during the first three seasons at the helm at Ursinus and led the Bears back to the Centennial Conference Tournament for the first time since 2017.
 
 
Johns Hopkins Head Coach: Nate Mulberg
Nate Mulberg was named the head baseball coach at Johns Hopkins on July 3, 2025.  Mulberg came to Johns Hopkins after serving as a full-time assistant coach at the University of Richmond since 2017. Mulberg replaced Bob Babb as the Blue Jays' head coach.  Babb wrapped up a remarkable 46-year run as the head coach at Johns Hopkins at the conclusion of the 2025 season. A 2014 graduate of the University of Rochester, Mulberg joined the Richmond coaching staff in January 2017.  There, he focused his work with the infielders and catchers while also serving as a hitting instructor. Mulberg also served as the program's recruiting coordinator since 2018 and initially began his coaching career in the Centennial Conference after spending two years as an assistant at Franklin & Marshall.

The winner will advance to game five of the Centennial Conference Tournament on Saturday, May 2nd which will start 30 minutes after the ending of game four where the losing team will play in an elimination game starting at 10:00 a.m. The Saturday and Sunday contests will all take place at Johns Hopkins.
