COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. –
Ursinus College senior midfielder Eric Farris (Pottsgrove,
Pa./Pottsgrove) scored his third goal 1:26 into the
overtime as the Bears (5-0, 1-0 Centennial) won their Centennial
Conference opener with a 8-7 win over Swarthmore (1-3, 0-1
Centennial) Wednesday afternoon.
Farris' goal, which
came in front of the cage, kept Ursinus undefeated with a 5-0 mark.
That mark is the best start in the history of the program.
Five other players scored
in addition to Farris, with sophomore attack David Kraus (Madison, Conn./Daniel
Hand), senior attack Dan Monzo (Collegeville,
Pa./Spring-Ford), freshman attack Taylor Allen (Bayport,
N.Y./Bayport Bluepoint), sophomore defender Mike Alfieri (Mount Laurel,
N.J./Lenape) and senior attack Pat Nagle (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward
Melville) all finding the back of the cage.
Farris, Kraus, sophomore
midfielder Mike Bloom
(West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and sophomore midfielder
Jeff Ocampo (Palm
Coast, Fla./Mantanzas) each had an assist.
For Swarthmore, sophomore
midfielder Max Hubbard had a game-high four goals, while senior
attack Tyler Bradshaw had two.
Hubbard's fourth
goal of the game with 6:10 left in the fourth gave Swarthmore at
7-6 lead. Ursinus then forced the overtime on a goal by Kraus with
4:57 left, on an assist by Ocampo.
Trailing 2-1 to start the
second quarter, Ursinus went on a three-goal run to take its
largest lead of the game at 4-2 on a goal by Farris with 10:55
left. Swarthmore responded with a two-goal run as Hubbard scored
with eight minutes left on an assist from sophomore midfielder John
Bukawyn, followed by a goal from freshman midfielder Wes Marcik
with 2:49 left.
Each team traded goals in
the third period, before Ursinus took a 6-5 lead heading into the
final period on a goal by Monzo off of a Farris assist with 11
seconds left.
Junior long stick
midfielder Ernie
Constantine (Bethpage, N.Y./St. Dominic) had six
groundballs on the day for Ursinus.
In goal, freshman T.J. Magnani (Bear, Del./St.
Mark's) had eight saves, while senior goalkeeper
Kevin Friedenberg had ten for the Garnet.
Ursinus travels to
Franklin & Marshall on Saturday.
