COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College softball team
stands at 1-1 after the first day of the 2010 Centennial Conference
Championships hosted by Ursinus at Eleanor Frost Snell Field.
The Bears, seeded number one, lost their opening game to
Dickinson 1-0, then battled back to stay alive in the tournament
with a 3-1 win over Gettysburg.
Ursinus (28-6) will face third-seeded Swarthmore Sunday morning
at 10 in the consolation final. If the Bears defeat the Garnet,
they will face fourth-seeded Dickinson in the championship game at
noon. One more loss by Ursinus and they will be eliminated.
In the opener, Ursinus was held to just one hit and had just two
base runners. The lone hit came in the bottom of the sixth as
freshman outfielder Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley)
bunt singled, but, was stranded at second.
Dickinson scored its lone run in the fifth as the Ursinus
defense committed two critical errors with two outs in the inning
that allowed the Red Devils to score.
For Ursinus, senior pitcher Lauren Davis-Macedonia (Mullica
Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) took the loss, despite allowing just
two hits and no earned runs. She struck out ten and walked one.
Allison Jordan had the win in game one for Dickinson, striking
out four.
In the Gettysburg game, Ursinus played as the visiting team and
scored a run in the third on a sacrifice fly by freshman shortstop
Kelli Jerdan (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) that scored
freshman first baseman Allison Pfrommer (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea
Regional).
Ursinus took a 2-0 lead in the sixth as Gentile scored on a RBI
single by Pfrommer.
In the seventh, Ursinus got a RBI single from Gentile to scored
sophomore pinch runner Rachael Vietheer (Bethpage,
N.Y./Bethpage).
Gettysburg, trailing 3-1 in the seventh, had two runners on with
one out but could not score.
Sophomore right fielder Kelly Kalovcak (Pottsville,
Pa./Minersville Area) was 3-for-4 in game two, while junior third
baseman Kristen Gallagher (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) had
two hits.
Davis-Macedonia got the win, striking out eight and scattering
four hits.
