Men's Lacrosse holds off Whittier, 6-5

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Six different players scored for Ursinus as the Bears (7-2) remained perfect at home with a 6-5 win over visiting Whittier (3-3) Tuesday night in men's lacrosse action.

Sophomore attack Brian Weil (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers) had a goal and an assist, with junior midfielder Andrew Kirlin (Doylestown, Pa./C.B. East), junior midfielder Mike Bloom (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), junior attack Andrew Bean (Tampa, Fla./Freedom), freshman midfielder Dylan Spangenberg (Downingtown, Pa./Malvern Prep) and senior long stick midfielder Tom Adelsberger (Sea Isle City, N.J./St. Augustine) each scoring.

Sophomore attack Taylor Allen (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Bluepoint) threw in an assist for the Bears.

Whittier, located in southern California, got three goals from junior midfielder Sam Russell.

Both teams traded goals in the first half, ending in a 2-2 tie at intermission. In the second half, Ursinus outscored the Poets 4-1, taking a 6-3 lead with 13:37 left on a goal by Bloom. Whittier scored two goals, including a goal by freshman defender Thomas Brook with 2:02 left to cut the Ursinus lead to one at 6-5.

After a delay of game penalty with nine seconds left, Whittier was given the ball across midfield but could not get a shot off.

Ursinus outshot the Poets 38-25 and forced 21 Whittier turnovers while scooping up 37 groundballs.

Sophomore goalkeeper Josh Baker (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) had nine saves and five groundballs in the win, with Weil adding in two caused turnovers. Freshman faceoff specialist Dewey Stierer (Phoenix, Md./Boys Latin School) was 6-for-14 on faceoffs on the evening.

Ursinus heads to Washington next Wednesday, the first of five straight conference games to end the season.
