Gettysburg slips by MLax, 10-9

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Gettysburg got a goal from sophomore midfielder Bijan Firouzan with 1:32 left in the game as the Bullets (7-5, 3-2 Centennial) defeated Ursinus (6-5, 0-5 Centennial) 10-9 in men's lacrosse play on Saturday at Patterson Field.

Gettysburg took the lead after Ursinus had rallied from a two-goal deficit in the final four minutes by scoring two goals in the span of 39 seconds.

Ursinus was led by four goals from freshman attack Logan Panaccione (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough), while sophomore attack Steve Smyrl (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) had three.

Sophomore attack Mike Neal (Shelby Township, Mich./De La Salle) had two assists, as did sophomore attack Mark Stratton (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township).

Ursinus came out on fire in the first quarter, scoring five goals. Ursinus had its biggest lead of the day at three goals when Panaccione scored an extra-man goal with 49 seconds left in the first on an assist from Stratton. Gettysburg provided the only scoring in the second, as Ursinus went into intermission with a  5-3 lead.

In the third, Ursinus scored its second extra-man goal with 9:58 left on an assist by sophomore midfielder Jake Weber (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township), giving Ursinus a 6-3 lead. Gettysburg then went on a four-goal run, capped by a goal from sophomore midfielder Jimmy Morris with 8:46 left in the game for a  7-6 Bullets lead.

Ursinus tied the scored at 7-all with 6:34 left when Panaccione scored on a Neal assist. Gettysburg would add two goals, the second by sophomore attack Robby Maddox with 4:08 left for a  9-7 Bullets lead.

On the ensuing faceoff, junior Shawn Caven (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) won the faceoff quickly, raced down field and fired the ball to Panaccione who scored to put the Bears within one. Smyrl scored his second goal of the game with 3:23 left to tie the score at 9-all. Caven finished with a game-high eight ground balls and was 11-for-18 on faceoffs. Junior midfielder Nile Thompson (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) had two caused turnovers on the day.

In goal, freshman Brian Neff (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) had 17 saves.
