Men's Lacrosse

Men's Lacrosse falls to 6th-ranked Washington College, 9-8, in overtime

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Washington College senior midfielder Kodie Englehart scored the game-winning goal with 2:08 left in the overtime as the sixth-ranked Shoremen (10-1, 5-0 Centennial) defeated Ursinus (6-5, 2-2 Centennial) 9-8 in a men's lacrosse matchup Wednesday night at Patterson Field.

Washington scored with nine seconds left to force the extra frame. In the overtime, Ursinus senior faceoff specialist Shawn Caven won the faceoff and got Ursinus on offense first. After a Bear timeout, Ursinus got two shots off, one of which hit the crossbar and the second one was a save by senior goalkeeper Ted DiSalvo.

The loss spoiled a five goal performance from junior attack Steve Smyrl (Glen Mills, Pa.), while sophomore attack Logan Panaccione (Hillsborough, N.J.) added in two.

After scoring the first goal of the game, coming from Smyrl with 12:46 left, Ursinus saw Washington score four straight goals, including two extra-man goals. Senior midfielder Hunter Nowicki's goal with 2:55 left in the first gave the Shoremen a 4-1 lead.

Ursinus then scored two straight, both from Smyrl, the latter coming with 11:24 left to get Ursinus within one at 5-4.

Nowicki would add his second at 7:27 to get Washington back up two, before Ursinus got one from Panaccione with 5:34 left in the second.

URsinus then scored two straight, the last from Panaccione with 1:41 left in the third on an assist from senior midfielder Dylan Spangenberg (Downingtown, Pa.) giving Ursinus a 6-5 lead.

Washington went on a two-goal run of its own, with Englehart scoring with 9:49 left for a 7-6 Shoremen lead. With 4:27 left in the fourth, Ursinus scored an extra-man goal as junior midfielder Jake Weber (Lititz, Pa.) scored on an assist from junior attack Mike Neal (Shelby Township, Mich.) to tie it at 7, then Neal would assist on Smyrl's fifth goal of the game at 1:29 for an 8-7 lead.

Sophomore midfielder James Fairchild (Wayne, Pa.) was 7-for-15 on faceoffs for Ursinus, with Neal and freshman defender Zach Jones (Garnet Valley, Pa.), and freshman midfielder Matthew Cioeta (Aston, Pa.) each had four ground balls.

In goal, sophomore Brian Neff (Ephrata, Pa.) had 11 saves for Ursinus.

The Bears head to Gettysburg on Saturday.
