Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Two goals from senior attack Mark Stratton (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) were more than enough for Ursinus, as the Bears (1-0) opened its season with a 6-2 win over Mary Washington (2-1) Saturday afternoon in men's lacrosse action.
Stratton scored twice, while senior attack Steve Smyrl (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley), senior midfielder Jake Weber (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township), junior attack Liam Duke (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) and junior long stick midfielder Patrick O'Donoghue (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central) each scored for the Bears in the win. Smyrl had two assists while Duke and Weber each picked up one.
Junior goalkeeper Brian Neff (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) had 11 saves for Ursinus in the win, while junior James Fairchild (Wayne, Pa./Malvern Prep) was 9-for-10 at the X, as Ursinus won ten of the game's 11 faceoffs.
Stratton scored the first goal of the game, with 2:29 left in the first on an assist from Duke. After Mary Washington's Greg Smith tied the score at 1-all with 9:20 left in the second, Ursinus went on a 4-0 run to put the game away.
Duke scored his first goal of the game with 4:06 left on an assist from Smyrl, for a 2-1 lead, while O'Donoghue scored 26 seconds into the third on an assist from Smyrl for a 3-1 lead.
The third goal of the run came from Smyrl, as he scored with 10:17 left for a 4-1 lead. The final goal of the run came from Weber at 12:19 for a 5-1 lead.
Jack Bondurant scored for the Eagles with 11:16 left in the game to cut the Bears lead to 5-2, before Stratton scored his second goal of the game on an assist from Weber with 4:58 left for the final 6-2 margin.
O'Donoghue finished with five groundballs, while sophomore midfielder Corey Kelly (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) had four.
Ursinus heads to Widener on Wednesday.
