Men's Lacrosse wins CC opener, 13-5, over Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Five goals in the each of the first two quarters helped Ursinus build a commanding 10-3 lead on its way to a 13-5 victory over Swarthmore (4-2, 0-1 Centennial) on Saturday night in men's lacrosse play.

The Bears (5-1, 1-0 Centennial) outshot the Garnet 46-22 on its way to the win.

For Ursinus, senior attack Mark Stratton (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) and senior midfielder Ian Moore (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven) each had three goals, with senior midfielder Jake Weber (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) and junior attack Logan Panaccione (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) each getting two. Senior attack Steve Smyrl (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) had two assists in the win as well.

With the score tied at 1-all in the first quarter, Ursinus went on a 4-0 run with goals by freshman midfielder Ian Desenberg (York, Pa./Central York) and sophomore midfielder Matthew Cioeta (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley). Moore scored back-to-back goals within a span of 54 seconds to give the Bears a 5-1 lead.

Leading 5-2 at the start of the second half, Stratton scored two straight goals, followed by Moore's third goal with 3:52 left for an 8-2 lead. The Garnet and Bears traded man-up goals, with Panaccione scoring with 1:45 left for a 9-3 Bears lead. Gerard Brown netted a goal with 30 seconds left for a 10-3 halftime lead.

Weber scored both two his goals in the fourth quarter, including a short-handed goal with 14:06 left in the game for an 11-4 lead. He then scored his second goal 29 seconds later for a 12-4 edge. Stratton would add his third at 11:04 left for a 13-4 edge.

Individually, James Fairchild was 8-for-15 from the X, while Cioeta, junior long stick midfielder Patrick O'Donoghue (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) and senior long stick midfielder Kevin Kohout (Woodbury, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) each had four groundballs. Junior goalkeeper Brian Neff (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) had seven saves in the win.

Ursinus hosts F&M on Wednesday night in a key Centennial Conference matchup.
