Women's Tennis

Change That Record

Box Score

The Ursinus College Women's Tennis team had a big day on Friday.

The Bears (11-5, 3-4 CC) went on the road and won their third consecutive match by downing Dickinson, 8-1.  With the win, they not only kept alive their hopes of qualifying for a first-ever appearance in the Centennial Conference playoffs, but they also made a little history.  The 11th victory set a program record for wins in a season.

"Someone asked me recently how the women's team was doing," head coach Pete Smith recalled.  "I said they were having a great year.  They asked me 'How great?' And it got me to thinking about where this year's women's team stacked up in a historical sense.

"I was the men's coach in 2009, and I remember that year the women had a great season, they had 10 wins and just missed the playoffs.  So I asked the head of archives here at Ursinus to do some research.  It turns out that was the most wins in program history.  So getting this 11th win was huge, and to do it at Dickinson, who has been such a strong program for so long, was really special.  Our girls just continue to impress me."

The Bears were again solid in doubles play, which has been a strong suit of the team in recent matches.  The first doubles team of Ashley Nguyen and Aileen Bevard set the tone for the match with a resounding 8-1 win in the first flight.  Soon after, both the second flight team of Audrey Whitebloom and Ariel Danziger, as well as third flight squad of BreAnna Bashaw and Christina Cromwell posted dominant wins.  All told, the Bears dropped only 6 games across the 3 matches.

"When you can sweep doubles and only drop 6 games all together, you have a team that came ready to play," Smith said.  "Coming off the big win Wednesday (over #18 Muhlenberg), I was concerned about the possibility of a let down.  But the girls were on point from the start."

The singles portion of the match was more of the same, as the Bears won 5 of 6 slots.  Nguyen, Bashaw, Cromwell, Bevard and Danziger were all straight set winners.  For Danziger, it was her team leading 12th singles win.

The Bears head to F & M on Saturday to take on the 11th ranked Diplomats.  Match time is 3 pm.
