Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's lacrosse team's search for an elusive first victory over Gettysburg was put on hold again Saturday, as the Bullets used two man-up goals separated by just 35 seconds late in the third to stave off the Bears in a 10-6 Centennial Conference decision.
Jack Harvey finished with four goals and an assist and Tommy Heller posted two goals and two assists as No. 15 Gettysburg (5-3, 1-0) improved to 18-0 in the all-time series. The Bullets have defeated the Bears (5-2, 0-1) in the last two CC championship games, as well as a double-overtime thriller in the 2015 NCAA second round.
Freshman Bobby McClure and sophomore Peter DeSimone tallied two goals apiece for the 14th-ranked Bears. McClure opened the scoring five minutes into the contest, and finished a feed from junior Lou Harrison with just 4 seconds remaining in the first half to get Ursinus within 5-3.
DeSimone trimmed the deficit to 5-4 with a man-up marker 90 seconds into the third quarter, but Gettysburg gained the separation it needed when Brian Kolen and Tommy Harvey deposited back-to-back extra-man goals, the second with 3:21 to play in the third period, to give the home side a 7-4 lead.
Sean Fumai scored on the man-down to make it 8-4 Gettysburg early in the fourth, and the Bears could do no more than trade a pair of goals with the Orange and Blue down the stretch.
Sophomore Brian Casey won 11 of 20 faceoffs for Ursinus, but the Bullets held a slim edge in shots (36-32) and went 3 for 7 on the man-up in addition to their man-down strike; the Bears cashed in on only one of their six extra-man opportunities.
Tim Brady finished with 10 saves for Gettysburg, including four in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Elliott Shevitz had seven for the Bears.
Freshman Noah Frantz grabbed a game-high six ground balls and caused a turnover to lead the Ursinus defensive effort, with fellow rookie Nolan Sachs posting three grounders and a pair of caused turnovers. Senior Matthew Cioeta and Casey matched them with three ground balls.
Harrison and junior Gerard Brown each contributed a goal and an assist, with Brown's helper tying him with assistant coach Mark Stratton '15 for second on the program's all-time assists chart (68).
The men's lacrosse team heads to Washington College for a conference clash on Wednesday, March 29.
