Haverford Holds Off Men's Lacrosse

Box Score

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Ursinus men's lacrosse team scored three goals in the fourth quarter but fell short at Haverford, 6-4, in a Centennial Conference grinder.

In a defensive battle, the Bears (2-10, 1-5) trailed 2-0 at halftime as Haverford received scores from Patrick Girard and Isaac Krier in the first. No goals were tallied in the second.

Midway through the third quarter, sophomore Ben Minardi found the back of the net for his first collegiate goal to get the Bears within 2-1.

The Fords (6-7, 3-4) extended the lead to 5-1 with three goals in the final two minutes and change of the third, breaking open up a tight struggle. Two tallies came from Brian Geffroy, who scored unassisted goals with 58 seconds and 3 seconds left in the period.

Eighteen seconds into the last quarter, Ursinus sophomore Evan Scott scored off a pass from senior Gerard Brown to get the Bears with three, 5-2. A dozen minutes later, Haverford's Ben Frost scored his second goal of the game.

Ursinus junior Peter DeSimone and Brown each picked up goals in the closing minutes of the game to draw closer to the Fords. DeSimone's goal was the 78th of his career, moving him into a tie for seventh in program history.

Brown's assist gave him 93 for his career, eight shy of the school record held by Anthony Tori '07.

Each goalie held strong as they faced an array of shots. Ursinus ripped 37 shots and Haverford registered 28. Haverford goalie Dylan Slack (6-7) earned the win after saving 17 shots, including 14 over the final three frames. In defeat, junior goalie Elliott Shevitz (1-6) saved 13 shots, his third straight game with double-digit stops.

Seniors Lou Harrison and Tim Miller paced the Bears with four ground balls apiece, while senior Brett Wojtkowiak and sophomore Noah Frantz each had two caused turnovers. Minardi was 5-for-9 in the faceoff circle, and Frantz won two of his four chances.

The Bears were a perfect 18-for-18 on clears and committed 12 turnovers to 14 for the Fords.

Ursinus plays its last home game of the season against Muhlenberg on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
