Men's Lax Outgunned at Dickinson in Finale

Box Score

CARLISLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's lacrosse team engaged in a high-scoring tug-of-war for most of the first two quarters at No. 12 Dickinson on Saturday, but the Red Devils closed the first half on a run and dominated the fourth frame on the way to a 19-10 Centennial Conference victory.

Senior Gerard Brown finished with three assists to cap his career with an even 100, just one short of the all-time school record. Brown added a goal and wound up with 149 career points, good for fourth in program history.

Sophomore Bobby McClure racked up three goals and three assists and junior Peter DeSimone chipped in three goals and one helper for the Bears (3-11, 2-6), who were unable to contain a multi-faceted Dickinson offense that got big games from Dylan Maher (six goals, one assist) and Tyler Strods (three goals, three assists).

Senior Lou Harrison and classmate Ian Desenberg each recorded a goal in their last game, with Desenberg moving into a tie for fourth in program history with 84 for his career.

The Bears trailed 2-0 after just over a minute of play, but rang up three in a row – courtesy of DeSimone, Harrison, and freshman Hakan Atillasoy – to take a short-lived lead midway through the quarter. The Red Devils tied it 14 seconds later and took the lead 20 ticks after that, but McClure's goal on a feed from Brown made it 4-all at the 6:15 mark. But Dickinson potted three in a row – the last with 5 seconds remaining – to take a 7-4 advantage after one.

Ursinus accounted for four of the first six tallies of the second, including one from Brown, another from Harrison, and back-to-back markers off the stick of DeSimone to pull within 9-8. Again the end of the stanza haunted the Bears, as Dickinson ran off three unanswered to surge into halftime ahead 12-8.

The teams traded a pair of goals in the third before the Red Devils (13-3, 7-1) put up all five in the fourth for the final margin. Ursinus was 0-4 on extra-man chances in the fourth quarter and finished 1-for-7 for the day.

Dickinson, which held slight edges in shots (44-40) and faceoffs (17-15), will be the number two seed in the CC tournament and host third-seeded Franklin & Marshall.

DeSimone's three goals gave him 83 for his career, one behind Desenberg. Harrison ended his time with the program with 39 goals and 14 assists.

McClure's 32 goals are the fourth-most in a single season in team history, and freshman Aiden Baltz picked up three ground balls to run his total to 69, the fifth-best output for a single campaign. Atillasoy's goal was the 17th of his rookie season.

Seniors Miles Matule and Brett Wojtkowiak also put on a Bears uniform for the last time.

Junior Elliott Shevitz made nine saves in goal for Ursinus. Cole Pellicano matched with nine for the Red Devils, and Andrew Jones added a pair.
