The Ursinus Bears Football Team will travel to face Gettysburg on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Last week, The Bears earned a 44-17 win over Moravian last week on Homecoming Saturday. Once again, a fast start propelled Ursinus as they raced out to a 21-3 lead in the first quarter over the Greyhounds. Moravian pulled within 21-10 in the second quarter, but the Bears answered with 10 points to close out the first half. Ursinus used a 98-yard scoring drive to go up 38-10 before adding one more touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Bears held a 411-172 total yard edge over the Greyhounds and held Moravian to just 71 rushing yards. It was the fifth time that the Bears held their opponent to under 100 rushing yards as a team.
Â
Â
Meanwhile, the Greyhounds fell 60-7 on the road to No. 8 Johns Hopkins last Saturday. Gettysburg cut the Blue Jays lead to 14-7 in the final seconds of the first quarter but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way. Johns Hopkins reeled off 46 unanswered points to pull away for the win.
Â
LAST MEETING: Last season, the Bears cruised to a 42-21 win over Gettysburg in their homecoming contest. Ursinus jumped out to a 21-0 lead at the half before extending it to 28-0 in the third quarter. The Bears responded to a long Gettysburg TD pass to score to more touchdowns and pull away from the Bullets. Sam Ragland totaled 106 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns in the win.
Â
Â
HIGH FIVE: Senior quarterback Jack Psenicska continued his prolific 2022 season with another big game through the air against Moravian last Saturday. Psenicska methodically sliced up the Greyhound secondary during the whole game by going an efficient 24-of-28 for 284 yards and matched the Ursinus single-game program record with five touchdown passes, a record he already shares. He became the first Ursinus quarterback in program history to record multiple five-touchdown passing performances in his career, matching his own record set back against Alvernia in the 2021 season opener. The single game passing touchdown record is also shared by Nicholas Dye who threw five against Juniata in 2007. He also earned the Kenneth E. Walker award which is handed out annually to the top performing Bears football player during their homecoming contest.
Â
Â
GROUND AND POUND: Junior fullback Dawson Fresses once again got the bulk of the carries for the Bears against Moravian and made the most of his touches. Fresses recorded a career-high 83 yards on 15 carries behind a strong 5.5 average per rush. He also added two touchdowns with one coming on the ground and one in the air. It was the second straight week Fresses scored two touchdowns in a game.
Â
Â
IT TAKES TWO: Senior wide receiver Nick Schnaars continued his strong 2022 season by catching a pair of touchdowns against Moravian on Saturday. He caught touchdown passes in each half for his second multi-touchdown game of the season. Schnaars now leads the team again with a career-best six touchdown receptions which also puts him fifth in the Centennial Conference. Schnaars led the Bears in receiving yards with 73 on three receptions on Saturday. Last season, Schnaars set career-highs against Gettysburg with seven catches for 116 yards.
Â
OWNING THE LINE: Senior defensive lineman Ethan Belville terrorized the Moravian offensive line last Saturday. Belville recorded four tackles with 3.5 of them coming for a loss. He also forced another fumble from a sack that the Bears eventually recovered. Belville's forced fumble gave him the Centennial Conference lead with three on the season. Belville led the Centennial in forced fumbles last season as well with five. He also now ranks second in the Centennial with 10.5 tackles for loss after Saturday's performance.
Â
TOP TARGET: Senior wide receiver Octavious Carter emerged as one of Psenicska's top targets against Moravian. Carter caught seven passes for 57 yards while catching his first touchdown since the Johns Hopkins game in week two. It was Carter's second-highest reception total of the season, and he ranks second on the team with 24 receptions, just behind classmate Kevin DePrince who has 25.
Â
Â
CONSISTENT FORCE: Senior linebacker Brett Gross racked up the tackles once again for the Bears against Moravian. Gross recorded a game-high 11 tackles (two solo) in the win and 2.0 TFL. It was Gross's third time this season he has recorded double-digit tackles as he ranks second in the Centennial with 63 total tackles. Gross also ranks second in the conference in tackles per game with nine.
Â
Â
SCOUTING THE BULLETS: Freshman quarterback Rocco Abdinoor has immediately taken the reins of the Bullets offense in his collegiate debut season. The dual threat quarterback saw his first action in week two against Moravian and assumed the starting role the next week against Dickinson. Abdinoor has thrown for 891 yards this season along with seven touchdowns to five interceptions. Abdinoor has been dangerous on the ground as well as he ranks just second behind junior Peter Schelling in rushing yards on the team with 339 and has scored a pair of touchdowns. He ranks fifth in the Centennial Conference by averaging 56.5 yards per game on the ground. Junior Jake Frisco paces the Bullets receivers with a team-leading three touchdown receptions and has posted 144 yards on 10 catches. Senior Teddy Girton leads the team in receptions with 24 primarily out of the slot receiver spot and ranks second on the team with 216 receving yards. Junior wide receiver Ryan McAndrew leads the team with 367 receiving yards but has yet to catch a touchdown pass this season.
            Â
On defense, junior defensive back Chris Lessel leads the team with 38 tackles (25 solo) and is tied for the team lead with two interceptions. Freshman defensive back Josh Williams ranks second on the team with 37 tackles (25 solo) and paces the team with four pass break-ups. Junior defensive back Matt Mikulka will also see time in the secondary as he ranks third with 36 tackles (26 solo) and is tied for the team lead in tackles for loss. Junior defensive lineman Chris Singleton Jr. powers the Bullets defensive line by leading the team with 2.5 sacks and is tied for the team lead with 2.5 TFL.
