COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Behind seven victories by fall or forfeit, the Ursinus College women's wrestling team cruised to a 35-10 dual meet victory over New England College on Saturday afternoon from the Floy Lewis Bakes Center.
With the victory, Ursinus opens the 2024-25 season with a perfect 3-0 record while the Pilgrims fall to 0-2 to start the season. Today's victory also marked the Bears eighth consecutive victory against Division III opponents dating back to December of last season.
Sophomore
Mandy Gavares opened the scoring by earning a forfeit at 110lbs to give Ursinus an early 5-0 advantage. The Bears quickly stretched their lead to 20-0 as first-year
Olivia Guy (117lbs), junior
Kalli Roskos (124lbs), and sophomore
Stacy Bloomfield (131lbs) each earned first-period falls for Ursinus. Guy opened the scoring with her fourth pin of the season with a pin at the 2:55-mark of the opening stanza versus New England's Madeline Li. She recorded the opening two takedowns including a "fireman's carry" to gain a quick 4-0 advantage. After a reset, Guy collected a double leg before repositioning for the pinfall with five seconds remaining in the period.
Next, Roskos tallied the opening score just 10 seconds into the period, while her second takedown led to the pin over Olivia Delegas at the 1:15-mark of the stanza. Bloomfield followed up by earning the quickest fall of the day with a 25-second fall over Morgan Gora to extend the Bears lead to 20-0. After the initial takedown, Bloomfield locked up a near sided cradle for the pin and her fourth fall of the season.
The Pilgrims earned a fall at 138lbs, but Ursinus responded with a pin from sophomore
Paisley Fox (145lbs) to increase their match lead to 25-5. Fox quickly jumped out to a 3-0 advantage as her opponent stepped outside the circle and a takedown gave her an early lead. Next, Fox snapped her opponent down to the mat, spun around for an additional two points, and recorded the fall shortly after. Sophomore
Emma Matera (160lbs) and first-year
Evette Colon (207lbs) closed out the meet with victories by forfeit to give Ursinus a 35-10 match victory.
The Bears return to action on Sunday, November 29th as they travel to Frostburg, Maryland for a dual meet against Frostburg State University at noon.
