The Ursinus Bears Football Team will head on the road for the first time in the 2024 season when they will travel to face Kean in Centennial-NJAC Conference crossover action.
The Bears defeated Kean 30-14 at home last season. Ursinus scored on their first drive of the game before adding a field goal at the end of the first quarter. Ursinus took a 23-7 lead in the second quarter and added one more touchdown in the third quarter while shutting out Kean in the second half.
BREAKOUT GAME: Senior linebacker
Marc Clayton was all over the field on defense for the Bears in their 45-14 win over Alvernia on Friday night. Clayton racked up a career-high and game-high 10 tackles (three solo), 1.5 TFL, and ran his first career interception back for a touchdown from 25 yards out. Clayton had seen action over the last few seasons at linebacker while doing most of his damage on special teams. Clayton made his mark back in 2022 when he blocked a punt against Dickinson the home regular season finale and ran it back for a touchdown. He was named Centennial Special Teams Player of the Week and earned a spot on the D3football.com Team of the Week.
TALE AS OLD AS TIME: Senior running back
Tony Holden torched the Alvernia defense for a third straight season. Holden recorded his third 100+ yard game in three seasons against the Golden Wolves with 118 yards on 16 carries with two touchdowns. He got the yards in less than 2 1/2 quarters of action and capped his night with a 40-yard touchdown run on the Bears opening drive of the second half. He has a run of at least 40 yards in each of those three matchups against the Golden Wolves and it was his ninth career 100+ yard game. He was averaging 7.4 yards per carry and did not lose a single yard in the game. Holden also has racked up five touchdowns in those three contests against Alvernia.
TRIUMPHANT RETURN: Senior safety
Ryan DiVergilis played in his first game since a season-ending injury against Johns Hopkins in mid-October of 2023 and returned in style. DiVergilis intercepted a pass in the third quarter and recorded six tackles (one solo) which tied for second on the team. It was the second straight year that DiVergilis recorded and interception against the Golden Wolves and it was his first interception since then as well. The two-time captain seeks another All-Centennial first team bid as one of the most well-respected defensive backs in the Centennial Conference.
STEEL CITY EXPANSION: On Monday morning, the Centennial Conference announced that Carnegie Mellon would join the league as an associate football member starting in 2025. A member of the Presidents Athletic Conference (PAC) since the 2014, the Tartans have emerged as not just a regional contender but a national contender as well. Carnegie Mellon won the PAC In 2021 and 2022. The Tartans currently sit 20th in the latest D3football.com Poll and AFCA Coaches poll.
KEEPING IT 100: Senior wide receiver
Cameron Dennis crossed 100 receiving yards for the first time in his career against Alvernia. He led the Bears with a career-high 110 yards on five catches and caught a game-long 48-yard pass in the first quarter that set up the Bears second touchdown of the game. Dennis brought in a career-high four touchdowns in 2023 and caught 20 passes for 378 yards. His big play making abilities proves to be a real threat once again and his five receptions were also a career-high.
DUDE, WHERE'S MY CARR?: Junior kicker
Jordan Carr had big shoes to fill last season when taking over for Dakota Wherrity, who holds multiple Ursinus kicking records. Carr did so and took a next step last Friday against Alvernia by making all six extra point attempts while easily nailing a 39-yard field goal in the second quarter. Carr also executed a successful Bears fake punt attempt late in the third quarter by running 19 yards to convert a 4th-and-4. He also averaged 38.3 yards per punt on three attempts in his first extended action at punter. Carr earned second team All-Centennial honors at kicker in 2023.
SCOUTING THE COUGARS: The Cougars dropped a low-scoring 7-0 contest to Morrisville in their season opener on Saturday afternoon. Kean surrendered a 74-yard touchdown on the first play of the game and that was the only score the Cougars needed in the contest. Kean's defense used three turnovers to stay in the game and had a 13-yard possible game-tying touchdown in the fourth quarter wiped off the board due to a penalty. The Cougars used a pair of quarterbacks in the game with sophomore Rocco Pellegrini and graduate student John Perry. Perry added 30 yards on the ground along with his 46 passing yards. Senior wide receiver John Kountouris caught two passes for 31 yards and is one of the top Kean targets after being named All-NJAC Honorable Mention in 2023.
On defense, junior linebacker Chris Amos paced the Cougars with 13 tackles (eight solo) and had one sack plus a forced fumble. All-NJAC Second team pick Meir Pittman recorded 10 tackles (five solo) and recovered the fumble. Fifth-year Javohn Arrington grabbed an interception and assisted on three tackles after also being named All-NJAC Honorable Mention. Sophomore defensive lineman Zamar Grove registered a career-high 12 tackles (four solo) while senior Nick Sura added eight tackles (five solo) and 2.0 TFL against Morrisville.
