DALLAS, Pa. – Behind some impressive times, the Ursinus College men's swimming team sits in second place after the second day of competition at the Cougar Splash hosted by Misericordia University.
Ursinus has totaled 344 team points, trailing only the University of Scranton, which leads with 535 points. Host Misericordia University is third with 240, followed by Ramapo College (221), Susquehanna University (163) and Juniata College (74) to round out the six-team field.
First-year
Alexander Nicolai opened Friday's session by finishing second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:50.03, while senior
David McCauley placed seventh at 4:57.94. In the 200-yard IM, senior
Francesco D'Avella and sophomore
Josh Travers tallied two of the top three times, with D'Avella (1:58.05) placing second and Travers (1:58.78) taking third. D'Avella's time ranks seventh all-time in program history, while Travers' time marks the ninth-best in the program's record books.
Sophomore
Jack Giuliana placed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle, touching the wall at 22.06, while first-year
Jack Campbell ranked ninth at 22.52. Ursinus closed out the opening session with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The quartet of Travers, D'Avella, Giuliana and Campbell combined for a time of 1:35.47.
On Saturday morning, Ursinus earned a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Travers, Campbell, McCauley and Giuliana posted a time of 1:28.01. In the 400-yard IM, junior Daniil Salimov placed fifth at 4:33.13, while first-year
Brady May (4:36.77) and junior
Adam Denn (4:38.74) took seventh and eighth, respectively.
Giuliana followed with the second-fastest time in the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall at 51.70, while sophomore
Quinn Grosvenor placed fifth at 53.52. Nicolai earned the Bears' first individual victory of the meet with a time of 1:44.73 in the 200-yard freestyle. Ursinus carried the momentum into the 400-yard medley relay, as Travers, D'Avella, Giuliana and McCauley finished first in 3:28.88.
Nicolai (1:58.23) opened Saturday evening's session for Ursinus, finishing second in the 200-yard butterfly, while Giuliana took fourth at 1:58.73. Travers added 13 team points in the 100-yard backstroke with a second-place finish at 52.90. D'Avella matched the effort in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing second at 58.51.
The Bears closed out the evening with a third-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Grosvenor, Nicolai, Salimov and McCauley combined for a time of 7:25.94.
Ursinus will return to action Sunday morning for the third and final day of competition at the Cougar Splash, starting at 9:30 a.m.
