DALLAS, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's wrestling team sent four wrestlers to the finals, securing two championships at the Cougar Wrestling Classic on Saturday afternoon at Misericordia University.
Juniors
Andrew Schaen (141) and
Braden Kmak (157) paced the Bears' lineup by each earning individual titles, while senior
Michael Adams (125) and junior
Sean Cowan (197) posted runner-up finishes.
Schaen, the top seed in the 141-pound bracket, posted a 4-0 record en route to his title. He opened with a 19-2 technical fall over Arcadia's Malik Barkor and advanced to the semifinals with a 13-2 major decision against York's Jacob Gryzbek. Schaen then earned a 7-0 decision over Eastern's Trokon Kai before defeating Eastern's Ryan Mansueto by a 16-7 major decision in the final. In the championship bout, Schaen jumped out to a commanding 10-1 lead in the first period with two takedowns and a four-point near fall. He added a late second-period takedown and three escapes in the third to secure the victory.
In the 157-pound bracket, Kmak cruised to the title behind four pins, including three in the first period. He opened with a fall at 2:40 against York's Jack Doran, then pinned Misericordia's Brady Colville at the 4:37-mark to reach the semifinals. Kmak followed with a 37-second pin over teammate Dillion Lombardi and capped his day with a fall at 1:39 against Eastern's Braydon Castillo to claim the championship.
Adams finished second at 125 pounds with a 3-1 record. He started with a 38-second pin of Wilkes' Thomas Longo, then earned a 15-0 technical fall over York's Luke Ragusa. In the semifinals, Adams defeated Misericordia's Phil Montes by a 12-5 decision before falling 11-5 in the final to Delaware Valley's former national qualifier Ethan Liptzin.
Cowan, the No. 2 seed at 197 pounds, also placed second with a 3-1 mark. He opened with a 17-2 technical fall over Eastern's Jose Tapia and then pinned Delaware Valley's Quincy Risper at 2:08 of the first period. Cowan pinned York's Luca Romasco early in the third period of his semifinal before dropping a 15-5 decision to York's Josh Stahl in the title match.
First-year Dillion Lombardi (157), senior AJ Cerulli (174), and junior
Benjamin Sanders (184) each earned third-place finishes, while junior
Andrew Perez (133) and senior
Derek Giordano (165) added fourth-place performances.
The Bears return to action on Friday, Dec. 5, when they travel to the New Standard Invitational hosted by York College beginning at 3 p.m.
