Donahue, a 1984 Ursinus graduate, was a two-sport athlete for the Bears in both basketball and baseball. He earned four letters in Collegeville and served as a team captain for Basketball his senior year. Donahue was a member of the 1981 basketball squad finished 23-8 and advanced to the NCAA Final four as a freshman. As a sophomore, Ursinus advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals in 1982. Donahue was a pitcher on the baseball team and pitched in 18 games over three seasons. After graduation, Donahue pursued a career in coaching and made a name for himself as one of the most decorated coaches in the history of Ivy League Basketball.


After a few stops as an assistant, Donahue got his first head coaching job at Cornell in 2000. Donahue led Cornell to three consecutive Ivy League titles from 2008 to 2010 and a trip to the 2010 NCAA Sweet 16. After a stint at Boston College, he returned to Southeastern Pennsylvania in 2015 to become the head coach at Penn and quickly turned the Quakers into a contender in the Ivy League. Donahue led Penn to Ivy League title in 2018, which was the first for the team since 2007. That same season, Donahue was named the Ivy League Coach of the Year, NABC District 13 Coach of the Year, and ECAC Coach of the Year.
